Sep 2021: Dr. Vint Cerf – VP, Chief Internet Evangelist at Google

First Friday Video Series

Dr. Cerf’s long list of accolades includes co-developing the TCP/IP protocol, a founding technology of the Internet, and working with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory on Interplanetary Internet. His presentation will cover history of the Internet, a look ahead, and insights into accessibility.

Cerf has served as vice president and chief Internet evangelist for Google since October 2005. In this role, he has been responsible for identifying new enabling technologies to support the development of advanced, Internet-based products and services from Google. He is also an active public face for Google in the Internet world.

Considered one of the fathers of the Internet, Cerf is the co-designer of the TCP/IP protocols and the architecture of the world wide web. Working with NASA and JPL, Cerf has helped develop a new set of protocols that can stand up to the unique environment of space, where orbital mechanics and the speed of light make traditional networking extremely difficult. Though this space-based network is still in its early stages, he says that we are now at “the front end of what could be an evolving and expanding interplanetary backbone.”

Cerf has also served as a technical advisor to production for the science fiction television series, “Gene Roddenberry’s Earth: Final Conflict” and made a special guest appearance on the program in May 1998. He has appeared on “NextWave with Leonard Nimoy” and often co-hosted “World Business Review” with Alexander Haig and Caspar Weinberger.
