With its proximity to the water, Cape Cod is a global hub to ocean research and home to a flourishing fisheries industry. And here, technology is being used to advance both.
At the Tech Council’s First Friday in March, The Nature Conservancy’s Christopher McGuire will bring that tech to life through stories about fisheries research being done in partnership with Cape-based fisherman. During this talk, you’ll discover how underwater drones, satellite tags, probabilistic algorithms, video cameras, and machine learning are being used to better understand the private lives of fish and sustainably manage the fisheries that are critical to our coastal communities.
A former research vessel captain, McGuire has directed The Nature Conservancy’s Ocean Program in Massachusetts since 2011. He is focused on implementing collaborative solutions to pressing fisheries and ocean conservation challenges.
McGuire, who lives in Falmouth, has been the principal investigator on fisheries research projects with Massachusetts fishermen on iconic species like Atlantic cod and halibut, and on innovative fisheries monitoring.
He holds a B.A. from Connecticut College, a Masters of Marine Affairs from the University of Rhode Island, and a 1600-ton U.S. Coast Guard Ocean Master License. McGuire serves on several state and federal committees, and currently chairs both the New England Fisheries Management Council’s Habitat Advisory Panel and the Stellwagen Bank Sanctuary Advisory Council.
