Solar: A Confluence of Technology and Business
(Or: mama always told me not to look into the eyes of the sun. But mama, that’s where the fun is!)
Presenter Luke Hinkle,
My Generation Energy, Brewster, MA
As we look for alternative energy sources there is renewed interest in solar, and according to Hinkle, it makes sense for a number of reasons.
- The technology is effective and reliable.
- The financials are sound.
- Progressive regulations for net metering, state and federal tax incentives, and predictable long-term revenue streams reduce the risk for those considering solar.
- And the last piece of the puzzle: creative business models put solar energy equipment where it does the most good.

Luke Hinkle is the Founder of My Generation Energy, a solar energy installation and development company based in Brewster. He sees deploying effective solar energy systems as a way to simultaneously tackle challenges which are sometimes in conflict: the economy, energy, and the environment.
After receiving a Ph.D. in physics from Pennsylvania State University in 1989, Luke joined MKS Instruments in Andover, MA where he served in various roles from Technology Manager to Product Marketing Director. In 2001, he moved to Cape Cod where he taught advanced math and science for five years at Falmouth High School. In 2006 he founded a consulting company, Complex2Simple, Inc., with clients who manufacture semiconductors, LEDs, solar cells, and supporting equipment.
Throughout his career he has pursued active scientific research and currently serves on the Board of Directors for a science society, AVS, with over 3000 international members focusing on advancing technologies associated with renewable energy.
My Generation Energy has grown exponentially by pioneering widespread adoption of distributed-inverter solar technology and by developing new business models for implementing large commercial projects.
