The Oyster: Science and Technology – October First Friday Breakfast

October 2015 First Friday Looks at the Oyster and Related Science and Technology as Council Marks International Oyster Symposium 

With Cape Cod being the site of the prestigious 6th International Oyster Symposium (the first time being held outside the Far East) in late October, the Cape Cod Technology Council will feature Roger Williams University Associate Professor of Marine Biology Dale Leavitt discussing the oyster and science and technology at the Council’s October 2 First Friday Breakfast.

The breakfast will be held at the MBL Swope Conference Center’s Meigs Room (second floor) in Woods Hole from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. This event is open to the public.  Please park in the Bar Neck Road parking lot.  PARKING INFO HERE

MBL staff is offering a guided tour of the MBL campus at the conclusion of the event for up to 20 attendees. Those interested should sign-up when entering the Breakfast and remain at the Meigs Room following the talk and Q&A. The MBL is an affiliate of the University of Chicago.

Dr. Leavitt, Associate Professor of Marine Biology: Dr. Leavitt joined Roger Williams in 2003 as Visiting Professor of Marine Biology with aquaculture responsibilities that include teaching, research and public outreach. Dr. Leavitt earned his Ph.D. in Nutritional Sciences (1987) from the University of Maine where he also received bachelor and masters degrees.

He has held positions as a Research Associate with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) where he specialized in Fisheries and Aquaculture, and a joint appointment as Aquaculture Specialist and Extension Program Leader with the Woods Hole Sea Grant program and the Cape Cod Cooperative Extension Programs. He has participated in a wide range of aquaculture-related projects that include environmental impact studies, seawater system design and engineering, economic development activities and aquaculture education and training. Dr. Leavitt is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Massachusetts Aquaculture Association and the Technical Advisory Committee for the Northeast Regional Aquaculture Center of the USDA. He is the Scientific Advisor to the Shellfish Advisory Panel of the RI Marine Fisheries Council, is a member of the Biosecurity Advisory Board of the RI CRMC and is a member of the CRMC Aquaculture Regulatory Working Group. He is the author of numerous scientific and technical articles.

The CCTC event includes networking and a hot breakfast followed by the presentation and questions and answers. The charge for CCTC members is $15, while there is a $20 charge for non-members.
