Sep 2025: The Science Behind the Sand: Understanding Coastal Erosion and Shoreline Change

First Friday Video Series

Most of our recent First Friday presentations are available on video. See the directory here on our website, or visit our YouTube channel.

Coastlines are constantly evolving as waves, tides, storms, and sea level reshape beaches and move sand from one place to another. Understanding these natural processes is essential for protecting coastal communities, managing natural resources, and planning for a changing climate.

In this First Friday presentation, Bryan McCormack explores the science behind coastal erosion and shoreline change, explaining how sand moves, why coastlines shift over time, and how scientists monitor these dynamic environments using modern coastal mapping and monitoring technologies.

Drawing on his work with Barnstable County, Cape Cod Cooperative Extension, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Sea Grant, the Center for Coastal Studies, and the Stone Living Lab, Bryan discusses the challenges facing our coastlines and how research is helping communities better understand and respond to coastal change.

Whether you’re interested in coastal science, environmental management, engineering, climate resilience, or simply curious about the forces that shape our beaches, this presentation offers an accessible look at the science behind one of our region’s most valuable natural resources.
