Jun 1: First Friday- Dr. Dave Gallo, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution

Uncovering the world oceans’ sunken mysteries…

When Dr. Dave Gallo was pursuing his Ph.D. in oceanography he had no idea he would use his knowledge to uncover some of the most intriguing sunken mysteries hidden in the world’s oceans. Dr. Gallo, Director of Special Projects at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, has led various expeditions including the search for RMS Titanic, and the Air France Airbus Flight 447 that downed in the southern Atlantic Ocean without a “may-day” call.

As guest presenter for CCTC’s March Breakfast meeting, Dr. Gallo will discuss the various expeditions which WHOI has led, using The REMUS 6000 and other deep-water submersible robotic vehicles, and the promise the technology holds for the future.

Dr. Gallo has been working with generations of sonar-operated undersea vehicles since joining WHOI in 1987 as Assistant Director of the Center for Marine Exploration. He was brought on to lead the development of innovative ocean exploring equipment including the deep sea submersible ALVIN, and the remotely operated JASON vehicle and ARGO towed-camera system that enabled discovery of RMS Titanic, and the REMUS 6000s used in the successful Air France Airbus jet search.

Dr. Gallo has led numerous expeditions exploring the sea bottoms of the Pacific, Mediterranean, Atlantic, and Indian oceans and brought the discoveries to audiences with high-resolution videos of the dramatic underwater discoveries.  He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in geological science from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Albany and a Ph.D. in oceanography from the University of Rhode Island.
