Cape Cod Astronomical Society – July “Second” Friday

July 12, 2019 @ 7:30 am - 9:30 am

Dr. James Lynch

The Cape Cod Astronomical Society is a group of amateur astronomers who enjoy looking at the cosmos and teaching others about the craft.

Their work includes:

  • Providing instruction and education for those who wish to view the skies.
  • Supporting those with special interests in astronomy, space science and related fields.
  • Preserving our night skies and saving energy by reducing light pollution.
  • Meeting once a month to share ideas and observing experiences, and to participate in an astronomy or science presentation.
  • CCAS also sponsors regular public “star parties” at the Werner Schmidt Observatory, as well as meetings where members can do casual observing and conduct scientific studies.

Dr. Lynch will cover the attractiveness of astronomy to the public, both as a hobby and a STEM outreach tool and the CCAS’ main activity areas: star parties, lectures, K-12 education, and public outreach.

Dr. James Lynch obtained his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Texas at Austin in 1978. He then worked at the Applied Research Laboratories of the University of Texas at Austin from 1978 to 1981, after which he joined the scientific staff at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI). He worked at WHOI until 2016, retiring as a Senior Scientist Emeritus. His research specialty areas are ocean acoustics and acoustical oceanography. He is current Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America and President of the Cape Cod Astronomical Society.
